Irrigation
Solar Irrigation
These irrigation systems provide a low-technology, easy to maintain, free to run, way to bring about greatly increased food security. They not only enable farmers to grow a more reliable crop each year during the rainy season, but also a second crop during the dry season.
Each solar irrigation system irrigates 200 acres and should produce 84,0000kg of maize which can be sold for about £130,000. The potential value of the two crops produced each year would be £260,000.
Community Irrigation Project
Each community irrigation project is provided as an interest-free loan. It is given with an agreement from the 200 farmers to sell half of their crops and to give the proceeds for community projects within their local area. (50% of two crops is the same as, or possibly more than, 100% of one which has often failed because of unreliable rains.) Loan repayments will be used to set up further irrigation projects.
The potential gross annual income produced from the crops which are sold should be £130,000. With the net income, we encourage communities to use these funds to set projects for the benefit of local families

A Smaller Solar Irrigation System, irrigating 38 acres, which is considerably less expensive
To date we have provided funds for 13 wind-pump irrigation systems and 4 solar irrigation systems
Digging Channels for Water
The water is drawn up from the well and it is then piped to a large plastic water storage tank. There is a tap on the side of this water storage tank which allows water to be drawn off into drainage channels and plastic piping which direct the water toward different farmers’ fields on a rotation basis. Farmers construct mud channels in each field which can be blocked and unblocked to direct the water to all their crops.
